Surprises from Shasta County’s Budget Approval Process

In June, the Board of Supervisors approved the County Budget of $656 million. This enormous sum is a 4.8% increase over last year’s budget and it includes the largest increase in county staff in 3 years. While this is not necessarily wrong, it is surprising given repeated claims from several board members that the county government is rife with waste and fraud. We would have expected the budget to shrink and staff to be cut. In this video, I describe how I would approach the budgetary process differently:
